One out of three kids does not have a healthy body mass index: Survey

MUMBAI: Almost one out of three school-going children in the country does not have a healthy body mass index (BMI) and almost half of them lack enough lower body strength, according to a survey. Mumbai students fared similarly on the fitness parameters. Conducted by EduSports, a school sports enterprise, the survey covered 1.70 lakh students from across 86 cities and 26 states. They tested students on sprint capacity , flexibility, upper and lower body strength, abdominal strength and BMI.

In its 7th edition, the survey found that the percentage of children with an unhealthy BMI increased from 20% last year to 33% this year. In Mumbai, out of the 843 children surveyed, only about 67% recorded a healthy BMI. Among other parameters, adequate lower body strength saw the lowest number of children meeting requirements. One in four children did not have the desired flexibility for their age.

"This trend needs to be reversed to have a healthy generation of children. Lack of physical activity increases the risk of obesity and health-related problems in adolescence, and adulthood. Schools provide the ideal environment to promote physical activity at the right age and improve fitness standards among children," said EduSports CEO Saumil Majmudar.

The survey also compared data of schools with that and a structured sports programme with three or more physical education periods per week versus schools with less than three physical education periods. It found that those with three physical education periods were healthier with students faring about 3-5% better across parameters.

But school principals said they were making enough efforts to ensure students had enough physical activities. "We offer students about eight sports options to pick from and a physical activity like yoga is included in the school timetable almost every day," said Chandrakanta Pathak, principal, HVB Global Academy , Marine Drive. Similarly, at St Mary's School (ICSE), Mazgaon apart from the physical education classes, primary students have a structured session in aerobics regularly .

George H.W. Bush to leave ICU; Barbara Bush discharged from hospital

HOUSTON — Former first lady Barbara Bush, cleared a day ago to leave the hospital where she has been a patient since midweek this past week, was discharged Monday, her doctors said in a morning press conference.

Since Jan. 14, her husband, former president George H.W. Bush, has been in intensive care with bacterial pneumonia at Houston Methodist Hospital, and she was hospitalized Wednesday with fatigue and coughing that later was diagnosed as viral bronchitis. He is expected to remain in the hospital but move from the ICU sometime Monday.

"He is sitting up and watching TV and anxiously awaiting his favorite oyster stew for lunch. He’s on minimal oxygen, joking and laughing with the nurses and doctors," said Dr. Amy Mynderse, a hospitalist at Houston Methodist. A hospitalist works in internal medicine but exclusively at a medical center, working with a person's primary care physician.

Both of the Bushes are in their 90s: The former president is 92, and his wife is 91.

George H.W. Bush continues to recover in hospital
Because the former president has bounced back so well, his doctors expect that he could leave the hospital as early as Friday, said Dr. Clint Doerr, his pulmonologist or lung specialist. But more likely will be a discharge over the weekend or next week.

Both Bushes are eager to return home in time for the Super Bowl, the doctors said. The New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons play Feb. 5 in Houston, and the family's spokesman, Jim McGrath, said Sunday that the couple want to attend the game.

US storms: At least 18 dead in Georgia and Mississippi

A state of emergency has been declared by Governor Nathan Deal in seven counties in south-central Georgia, where 14 people were killed.

Four more people were killed by tornadoes in Mississippi on Saturday.

More storms and a "tornado outbreak" are expected in northern Florida and southern Georgia, the National Weather Service says.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency said in a news release that the 14 victims were in the southern Cook, Brooks, Dougherty and Berrien counties.

Most of the deaths occurred in Cook County, when a mobile home park was apparently struck by a tornado.

Cook County coroner Tim Purvis said numerous mobile homes had been "levelled" before dawn on Sunday in the park near the city of Adel. He said emergency teams were still searching for survivors.

Mr Purvis estimated that the park has about 40 mobile homes in total, and roughly half were destroyed.

"These storms have devastated communities and homes in South Central Georgia, and the state is making all resources available to the impacted areas," Governor Deal said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump said he had spoken to Gov Deal and expressed his condolences for the loss of life.

Yoga guru ‘defeats’ Olympic silver medalist 12-0 in strange wrestling bout

As India's most famous yoga guru descended the ramp toward the wrestling arena in New Delhi, a voice boomed through the loudspeakers: “Please welcome the man himself! BABA. RAMDEEEEEEEEV!”

But instead of the heavy metal that accompanies World Wrestling Federation stars such as Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin, Ramdev was serenaded toward the ring by light Indian acoustic fare, reminiscent of what you might hear in an elevator in a New Delhi hotel.

There was one similarity with the WWF "fights," though. This, too, involved a lot of acting.

Ramdev, 51, was matched against Andriy Stadnik, a Ukranian who won the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The match was set up as a promotional kickoff for the second season of India's Pro Wrestling League.

Ramdev knows a thing or two about promotion; he has cultivated an enormous worldwide following with his televised yoga instruction and now runs a giant health products company that sells everything from shampoo to instant noodles. He says the company, Patanjali, is worth more than $600 million, and was the fastest-growing consumer company in India in 2015.
